Thank you for reminding us of this historic event. I was taken by my parents to see both the stage play and the movie many decades ago, and it had a profound effect on me at the time. In fact, it's probably one of the reasons I became, and remain, a proud "bleeding-heart" "tree-hugging" "woke" progressive. :)
Don't forget to mention "Inherit the Wind", the movie with Spencer Tracy. Have not seen that in decades. Who knew, way back then what all of that would have led to!! Thank you, Steve.
Right now, self styled moderate Democrats (and DNC and party leaders) are totally freaked out that Democrats in NYC have a chance to elect a progressive Democratic mayor. That somehow a very blue city electing a Democratic Socialist, will somehow make it impossible to elect any Democrat in any bluish, purple, and red areas. So these creeps are doing everything they can to sink Mamdani and stick NYC with Eric Adams, arguably the most corrupt NYC mayor in the last 100 years. The party might instead play up that Mamdani's platform is in the tradition of popular Democratic New Deal and Great Society programs. By embracing Mamdani, the Democratic party can claim to be returning to its Main Street roots.
here. Sewer socialists in Milwaukee to Al Smith and Fiorello here in NY. And FDR and Eleanor. Great things were done. Gore Vidal said, take another look at Bryan. The young Bryan. ZoMan will illuminate that!
An American tragedy, and unforced strategic error, for the Democratic party to throw all that away. And for what? The Clintons and neoliberalism. (Is there a typeface for expressing absolute contempt;)
Although a CSpan aficionado with favorite elected officials, I am rarely enthusiastic about a candidate. But I am also a Indian film / Bollywood aficionado, and am charmed by the Shakespeare Wallah clip in Mamdani and Mahdur Jaffrey's rap video and Mamdani's SRK spoof and Om Shanti Om music in his Hindi campaign video.
So ... Mamdani really seems to be All That. And then some. And I trust he would be excellent at putting together a seriously good administrative team. Getting good things accomplished and good messaging to get the word out.
Enjoy;)
Merchant Ivory's SHAKESPEARE WALLAH (Restoration) | Official US Trailer
Steve, I'd like to invite you to our Scopes Trial Centennial in Chattanooga, TN. It begins next Friday, July 18 and continues until Sunday when we'll tour the courthouse in Dayton, TN. We are a group of secular humanists and freethinkers. From your recent writings about the trial, I know we have a great deal in common. The conference is presented by the Center for Inquiry and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Thank you for bringing this consequential trial to the attention of your audience.
The films of a true right-winger, Frank Capra, illustrate this earlier shared populist strain in our culture. The film, "Inherit the Wind," unfortunately doesn't stand up as well as it ought to. The Stanley Kramer-ism of it is now intrusive in how much it stacks the deck on the side of righteous liberalism. Some great old-fashioned acting (which the young will probably think of as overacting) from Spencer Tracy, Frederic March, and Florence Eldridge, though---and I, for one, even like Gene Kelly's performance as the Mencken-esque reporter.
I would recommend the award-winning book by Brenda Wineapple, Keeping the Faith. The movies were "entertaining," but I now realize how much was left out.
In this propulsive account of the 1925 Scopes Trial, Wineapple documents the antecedents that led to it and how the trial exposed fault lines in America that continue to haunt us. Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan emerge as complicated and fascinating characters who embody different versions of American democracy. Keeping the Faith is a terrific story about a pivotal moment in our history and a book that illuminates the conflicts we are seeing in our country today.
I'm catching up on my gazillion emails today from the bottom up, and I am so hoping that your Monkey Trial Sunday Funnies is sitting at the top of my in-box!

More relevant than ever. This case should be taught/discussed by high school at the latest.

There is an amazing Socialist political history

Anything other than uniting all opposition to Trump is a wasted opportunity, and a big win for Twiddle Dump.
I love your analysis of DNC vs Mamdani. Zorhan will eat them for lunch!
OMGosh.
From your mouth to God's ear.
Or at least to the electorate's ear.

I’m so angry, @lin. at the hate being thrown at Mamdani. Bad enough by right; worse by left.
Foreboding.
Interesting precursor to the times we find ourselves in today.
