Sotomayor's Dissent
From the soon-to-be obsolete Court
The Trump mob, which extends across Congress to the Supreme Court, is effectively killing and raping at a desperate rate. They know that the clock is ticking on them.
And our answer is coming.
Some actions from our friend Laura Conwesser:
Although a lot of this was written yesterday, Wednesday, I am finishing it on Thursday evening, after a day of horrible SCOTUS decisions. It will take decades to repair the damage this MAGA court has done. Can’t wait for the birthright citizenship decision, but more about that later in this email.
Partially offsetting the SCOTUS nightmare, a Federal Court judge in Boston ruled that most of Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting is illegal. However, in the meantime, the USPS is proposing a rule that will require states to share information about voters who request mail-in or absentee ballots for federal elections. That includes social security numbers and other private, personal information. I don’t think we can assume that their propsed change will fall by the wayside, but we can assume that the DOJ will appeal today’s Federal Court ruling. Last week’s email had a request that you submit your comments in opposition to the proposed USPS policy change. If you have already submitted your comments, you can skip this little bit and move on to the next request. If you have not, you can submit your comments online HERE. The process is very simple; just follow the directions. If you would like suggestions about what to say, you can find some HERE. The deadline for submitting your comments is midnight on July 2. PLEASE DO THIS NOW AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO DO IT, TOO. Please excuse my Trumpian use of all caps, but this is incredibly important. These restrictions could disenfranchise countless millions of voters and give Trump the ability to choose who gets to vote.
While we are on the subject of voting rights, Trump has said that he will not sign the bipartisan housing bill that passed in Congress yesterday until his SAVE Act is passed. It has failed to pass several times, but we cannot take the chance that our representatives will continue to stand up to the bully-in-chief. They really want the housing bill to become law. After last night’s War Powers Act about-face by Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy, we certainly don’t want to count on them! Call your Senators and House members and tell them to vote NO on the SAVE Act. As a special treat, HERE is Ann Telnaes’s thoughts on that.
You were recently asked to help stop the appointment of four Trump flunkies to the USPS Board of Governors. Thanks you to all who wrote to your Senators, the administration withdrew two of the four names. That’s fantastic but not enough. Please call your Senators again and tell them to vote NO on Jeffrey Brodsky and William Gallo. Giving Trump control over the USPS would be disastrous, both for the voting rights and because he wants to privatize it.
Through their many landmark legal victories, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has spent decades fighting against the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists.Trump’s Department of Justice has brought an indictment against them on spurious charges. At the same time, they have bullied Fidelity, Schwab and Vanguard into prohibiting customers with donor-advised funds from donating money to SPLC. Please use this tool to tell these financial giants to stop doing DOJ’s dirty work by blocking donations to SPLC.
On May 12, the House passed the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, or “CORCA”, which would create a new ICE-run policing hub to assist state and local law enforcement agencies with investigations into retail theft. The National Immigration Law Center has an easy tool to tell your Senators to vote NO on this terrible piece of legislation. Feel free to call them, too.
On the heels of JD Vance’s weird appearance on The View last week, the FCC is attempting to take control of the show’s guest booking. If successful, the FCC’s control would be another devastating attack on the First Amendment. Make your objections to this takeover attempt known by July 6. Every voice matters.
This is a reminder about actions this Saturday, June 27, in conjunction with the consortium of groups called All of US. You can find an event near you and see which groups are involved HERE. The one in NYC is at 3pm in Foley Square. Hope to see you there.
Indivisible has several actions they would like us to take. The question of the FISA Act, section 702, is still not settled. Please message your electeds HERE. If you didn’t already reach out to Dems about the CLARITY Act, you can do that HERE. Although it is still a few weeks off, you can get more information about the July 17-19 Good Trouble weekend HERE.
Following up on the SCOTUS topic at the top of this email, we are waiting for them to announce the decision on birthright citizenship, Barbara vs. Trump. If you live in the NYC area, Hands OFF NYC, NY Immigration Coalition, Make the Road and their allies are prepared to have a rally. If the decision upholds the constitution and birthright citizenship, we will gather in Foley Square at 1pm to celebrate. If the decision is negative and destroys birthright citizenship, we will gather in Foley Square at 6pm to protest and voice our anger. Keep your eyes open. The decision could come as soon as Monday, June 29.
My sincere apologies for the length of these emails. You would probably not be shocked to learn that I am very selective and eliminate many worthy actions. And my sincere thanks to everything you are trying to do to keep our democracy functioning.
All the best,
Laura

Two of the children of Justice Barrett she adopted — from Haiti. Wonder how she explains this ruling to them.
Sotomayor's words combined with your artistic gifts made me cry. Thank you Steve.
